Crack Identification in Tungsten Carbide Using Image Processing Techniques

Laser processing of cutting tool materials particularly cemented carbides can induce many surface defects including porosity, balling, and micro-cracks. When present in the microstructure tools, micro-cracks lead to chipping early failure. The detection identification cracks be used predict performance post laser processing. To develop a method for crack scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were used. manual review SEM is subjective time consuming. This study presents identify quantify from an tungsten carbide (WC) MATLAB. Image algorithms segment regions other background microstructure; subsequently extract geometry information. results show successful segmentation with accuracy greater than 95 % across range different parameters.
